Nani Bai Ro Mayro Puja Katha – A Devotional Tale of Faith and Lord Krishna’s Grace

India is a country rich in infinite metaphysical tales depicting God's love, miracles and the devoted saints acts of adoration. One of these many stories is treasured by countless devotees in the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra as Nani Bai Ro Mayro Katha. This is a heart touching tale of a daughter's marriage, a father's helplessness and Lord Krishna itself. This story has inspired generations of devotees to trust in the power of bhakti and the protective grace of the almighty.

Who Was Nani Bai?

Nani Bai was the daughter of Saint Narsi Mehta, a 15th-century poet-saint from Gujarat and also an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. Narsi Mehta devoted most of his life time to spiritual devotion by singing bhajans, and doing kirtans in praise of the Lord. Although Narsi Mehta was rich in spiritual wealth, he lived in extreme material poverty as Narsi Mehta had very little means to support his family.

According to the custom in Indian society, when Nani Bai was married, it was expected that her father would send a "Mayro" a grand post marriage gift procession  from the bride's family to the groom's. However, Narsi Mehta had no wealth to fulfill this social obligation.

The Significance of Mayro

Mayro was more than just one tradition, it symbolized  social respect and family pride. Without it, the groom's family may feel humiliated, which can lead to social insult to the bride's family. Nani Bai's in-laws demanded Mayro and when it did not come, she was mocked and insulted.

Listening to the sorrow of his daughter, Narsi Mehta relied on only the one never failed him, Lord Krishna. His approach was prayerful and emotional, he would write bhajans which were also very emotional, essentially dumping his grief and helplessness on Lord Krishna.

The Divine Intervention – Lord Krishna’s Mayro

Due to unconditional devotion of the saint, Lord Krishna appeared in disguise and performed one of the most miraculous acts of compassion in Hinduism. He arrived at Nani Bai's in-laws house with elephants, horses, gold utensils, clothes, sweets and jewellery, with a grand Mayro. The display of Divine opulence surprised everyone.

Later, it was discovered that it was Lord Krishna himself who came to protect the honor of Narsi Mehta and maintain his daughter's dignity. This miraculous act is not just remembered, till date it is celebrated with reverence in temples and homes all over India.
